    OpenStax Tutor

     

    Wouldn’t it be nice if your textbook learned from you as you learned from it?  Using advanced machine learning technology and cognitive science, OpenStax Tutor is creating just such an electronic textbook.

    While too many of today’s e-textbooks are just as static and uninviting as their paper counterparts, OpenStax Tutor is an engaging e-textbook that integrates text, video, simulations, problems, feedback hints, and tutoring and optimizes the learning experience based on each user’s background, context, and learning goals. Our approach couples the latest advances in cognitive science, machine learning, and open educational resources (OER).


    The OpenStax Tutor project has been funded by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  More information is available at http://openstaxtutor.org.

     

    Machine Learning and Signal Processing

     

    Today’s sensors and signal processing systems are under increasing pressure to accommodate:



    • ever larger and higher-dimensional data sets, including high-resolution images and video, volumetric data, three-dimensional (3-D) video, 4-D+ light-fields, and beyond;

    • ever faster capture, sampling, and processing rates;

    • ever lower power consumption in order to permit remote, networked, battery operation for long periods;

    • communication over ever more difficult channels;

    • radically new sensing modalities.


    Fortunately, over the last decades, there has been an enormous increase in computational power  thanks to Moore’s Law, which provides a new angle to tackle these challenges. We are currently on the verge of moving from a digital signal processing (DSP) paradigm, where analog signals are sampled periodically to create their digital counterparts for processing, to a computational signal processing (CSP) paradigm where analog signals are converted directly to any of a number of intermediate representations for processing using optimization techniques. At the foundation of CSP lie new uncertainty principles that generalize Heisenberg’s between the time and frequency domains and the concept of sparsity.

    Multi-university research projects based at Rice University include the ARO MURI on Opportunistic Sensing and the DARPA A2I Receiver program.


    Support for these projects has come from NSF, ONR, DARPA, AFOSR, ARO, AFRL, DOE, NGA, EPA, NATO, the State of Texas Advanced Technology Program, and a number of industrial sponsors, including the Texas Instruments Leadership University Program.

    OpenStax College is a Rice University-based nonprofit organization committed to improving student access to quality learning materials. Our free textbooks are developed and peer-reviewed by educators to ensure they are readable, accurate, and meet the scope and sequence requirements of your course.     Frustrated by the limitations of traditional textbooks and courses, Dr. Richard Baraniuk founded OpenStax (then Connexions) in 1999 at Rice University to provide authors and learners with an open space where they can share and freely adapt educational materials such as courses, books, and reports.


    Today, OpenStax CNX is a dynamic non-profit digital ecosystem serving millions of users per month in the delivery of educational content to improve learning outcomes.


    There are tens of thousands of learning objects, called pages, that are organized into thousands of textbook-style books in a host of disciplines, all easily accessible online and downloadable to almost any device, anywhere, anytime.
