Picturing the True Form: The Making of Daoist and Buddhist Visual Cultures in Medieval China
Shih-shan Susan Huang is interested in interdisciplinary approaches that integrate art, religion, and history. Her research focuses on Daoist and Buddhist art in medieval China. Currently, she is working on a book manuscript entitled Efficacious Art: the Making of Daoist and Buddhist Visual Culture in Song China, 960-1279. She examines how the notion of religious efficacy shaped the making of medieval visual culture and why certain images were widely reproduced and transcended religious and social boundaries. In addition to the large body of surviving Buddhist and Daoist paintings, prints, and sculptures, her primary sources include both religious scriptures and such sources as local gazetteers, temple chronicles, travel notes by Japanese monks, and miscellaneous writings and archaeological findings from the medieval period. Dr. Huang's recent publications appear in Artibus Asiae and Orientations.
