    My research program focuses on using chemical, biological, and engineering approaches to design novel microstructures that address problems where conventional techniques are lacking. My main research area has been in developing new materials using magnetic particles. These synthetic materials will be chains of patterned magnetic colloids that have rigidity and length specificity, and are able to demonstrate capability for folding, self-assembly, and specific chemical and biorecognition. Active exploration of diverse chemistries and connectivities in these bioinspired colloidal assemblies will offer the potential for self-organized materials with greater chemical diversity and stability than their natural counterparts. A key obstacle to assembling these and other materials is understanding the fundamental chemistry and physics of the assembly processes. I have focused our research on the influence of variable flexibility on the shape and morphology of linked colloidal chains. These multilink chains, colloidal analogs of block copolymers or polypeptide chains, are comprised of magnetic nanoparticles which have been “glued” together with different linker molecule. Our main research accomplishment has been the development of novel microstructures that are formed when colloidal chains are chemically patterned using microfluidics and magnetic fields. This technique offers a way for intermolecular interactions to be designed along the backbone of a chain by manipulating the electrostatic forces along the length of the chain. The conjugate of colloids and patterned linkers produces a new, hybrid type of molecule that can synergistically combine the individual properties of the two components to yield new and unusual properties. This research brings together methods from surface science and microfluidics to probe fundamental questions of self-assembly. Another area of interest is the use of microcantilever beams to investigate the lipid-dependent mechanisms responsible for vesicle rupture and bilayer fusion to form supported lipid bilayers and monolayers. These supported lipid bilayers have been widely studied as model systems for elucidating the properties of lipids, membranes and membrane proteins.
