Asian Film Festival
 

Programmed and hosted the 4th Asian Film Festival, featuring films from South Korea, India, and Japan.  Cosponsored by the Chao Center, the Asia Society, and the Office of Minority Student Affairs.

 
2nd Annual Houston Cinema Arts Festival
 

Programmed and hosted an appearance by Isabella Rosselini and a screening of her father's film Voyage to Italy to commemorate the 40th year of the Rice Media Center. 


Hosted Francois de Menil and his film Hanging Max Ernst to honor the Menils and their founding of the Rice Media Center in 1970.

 
Brazilian Film Festival
 

Hosted a series of contemporary Brazilian films, sponsored by the Consulate of Brazil, September 24 through September 26.

 
Festival of Contemporary Spanish Films
 

Hosted and sponsored, for the second time, a series of contemporary films from Spain, cosponsored by the Spanish consulate, Hispanic Studies.  We screened eight films in four days, October 15 to 18.

 
Palestine Film Festival
 

Hosted the screenings of Houston Palestine Film Festival, May 14 and 15.

Ang Lee Retrospective
 

Host and programmer, Ang Lee Retrospective of films, sponsored by Taiwan Office of Cultural Affairs.  Films included Pushing Hands, Eat Drink Man Woman, and The Wedding Banquet.

 
Houston Public Library Student Film Contest
 

Judged Houston Public Library Student Film Contest, watching 50 entries, in March 2010.

 
Turistas
 

Hosted a screening of Turistas, part of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Latin Wave film festival, April 29.

 
Starlight Cinema
 

Hosted two screenings for the Rice and the Southgate communities, sponsored by Public Affairs, in November and December.

 
Murfee Worsham Memorial Screening
 

Programmed and hosted a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey as part of the Murfee Worsham memorial screening series, sponsored by the Worsham family, on September 10 and 11.

 
Araya
 

Hosted a special screening of Araya, a Venezualan documentary from 1958, and skyped a interview with director Margot Benecerraf.  Cosponsored by Hispanic Studies.








 
Houston PBS Community Cinema Series
 

Hosted PBS documentary screenings with panel discussions by community activists.  Eight screenings during the year, including The Calling, The Eyes of Me, Village Called Versaille, Dirt!. and others.

 
Centennial of the Mexican Revolution
 

Hosted Mexican director Juan Antonio de la Riva and two of his films, honoring the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.  Cosponsored by the Mexican Consulate.

 
17th Annual Iranian Film Festival
 

CoProgrammer, 17th Annual Iranian Film Festival, a partnership with Museum of Fine Arts Houston.  Films screened February 5 and 6.

 
The Wailing Wall
 

Hosted, with Houston Hillel, a documentary about women and prayer at the Wailing Wall on April 12.  The director was present.

 
Public Affairs Student Films
 

Hosted the Public Affairs Student Film contest, including the awards, on April 14.

 
Flicks: Student Films from Visual Arts
 

Hosted the Student Film Screenings at the end of the semester, April 22.

 
Southwest Alternative Media Project
 

Hosted and sponsored a variety of SWAMP Workshops on filmmaking, eight in total, including the two day Business of Film workshop.  These often include screenings by local and national film makers.

 This manuscript concerns the effects of mass culture and the public debates of mass culture on Hollywood films in the postwar era.

As Director of Rice Cinema I have curated in 2003 films series on documentarian/essayist Chris Marker, Japanese Horror films, local Texas filmmaker Eagle Pennell, Iranian cinema, Spanish thrillers, and many others.

 

The World is Yours: Globalization, Gangsters, Genre

 

In 2008, I have begun work on a scholarly manuscript on the relationship between neoliberalism, globalization, and the concept of genre as a transnational network of meaning. The work focuses on gangster films from around the world.

 

Sleep No More: Mass Culture and the Uncanny in Postwar America

 

This manuscript concerns the effects of mass culture and the public debates of mass culture on Hollywood films in the postwar era.

Curatorial Work as Director of Rice Cinema: Mediterranean Film Festival

 

Developed, curated and hosted the First Annual Mediterranean Film Festival, with the Consulates of Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, France, and Italy.  A film festival developed around the idea of a region rather than a nation, it was created to foster bonds between rival nations through transnational cultural ties.  The opening feature all six consuls and, after that, each night featured films from two of the nations, with speakers introducing the films.  President Leebron gave the opening night address.
