    Research Statement

     

    DR. LIANG joined the Rice faculty in 1991 after holding positions at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Michigan State University and Stanford. His research areas are in high energy density physics and plasma astrophysics, especially x-ray and gamma-ray radiation from collapsed objects such as neutron stars and black holes, and the laboratory simulation of astrophysical phenomena with ultra-intense lasers. Using Monte Carlo numerical simulations he pioneered the modeling of radiation emitted by relativistic plasmas, plasmas so hot that a significant fraction of the energy goes into the creation of positron-electron pairs. He is most well known for his 1994 proposal to create electron-positron pair plasmas using ultra-intense lasers irradiating gold targets, which was successfully demonstrated experimentally in 2008. Dr. Liang was a guest investigator of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and a user of the Texas Petawatt Laser in Austin TX and Omega Laser at Rochester NY. In 2003-2004 he served as Chairman of the Topical Group in Plasma Astrophysics of the American Physical Society.  He is a fellow of the American Physical Society with over two hundred ninety publications.

     

    Current Research Focus of Edison Liang

     

    At present Dr. Liang focuses on three main research areas: large-scale Particle-in-Cell (PIC) kinetic simulations of relativistic plasmas, with applications to astrophysics and laser-plasma interactions, radiation magnetohydrodynamics, and laboratory experiments involving intense lasers.  There is increasing synergism between relativistic plasmas in astrophysics and plasmas produced by ultra-intense lasers in the laboratory. This allows a controlled laboratory environment to study exotic astrophysical phenomena such as gamma-ray-bursts and active galactic nuclei. Conversely, what we learn from cosmic plasma processes may have important applications to future human technologies, such as inertial fusion, antimatter creation, directed energy and particle accelerators.  Dr. Liang has ongoing collaborations with UT Austin, LLNL, LANL, LSU, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
