    Current Research

My current research is as follows:

    1.  A chapter on recent quantitative work on arms races for Encyclopedia of Empirical International Relations Theory (Oxford University Press; edited by William Thompson).

    2.   I am working with Richard Eichenberg (Tufts University) and Pierangelo Isernia (University of Siena) on public support in about 60 countries (primarily using the World Values Survey) on the sources of support for increasing defense spending.

    3.  I am working with Devika Subramanian (Rice Computer Science Department) on the use of Tweets to track foreign policy events.  We are working with a Tweet collection of the Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong that occurred in the fall of 2014.  Many people are using Tweets to track domestic and international events.  But there has been less work on issues relating to how this can be done in an effective manner.  There are several aspects to this project.  First we have to determine how many Tweets in are collection were generated by Bots and therefore should be removed from the dataset.  Second, we want to do a preliminary analysis that compares the rise and fall of the Umbrella Revolution as measured with Tweets to a timeline developed by reading about the events of the Umbrella Revolution.  We then want to write a grant proposal for a more detailed study of the use of Tweets to follow events.
