Sound Reasoning

In collaboration with Connexions and supported by an Innovation Grant from CITI, I developed a web-based, interactive music appreciation course titled "Sound Reasoning: How to Listen to and Understand Music." The course is entirely listening-based, with no ability to read music required. Sound examples are interpolated directly into the text. The course is based on an innovative method for teaching music appreciation, based on style-independent principles that apply to music of any time and place.

Illuminations
I was commissioned to reconstruct and orchestrate my late teacher Earl Kim's last work, "Illuminations," which he completed on the day of his death in 1998. The work was premiered by soprano Karol Bennett and the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra in February 2003. Also performed in a version for soprano and piano by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players

Music and Early Language Acquisition

I co-authored a paper on music and early language acquistion with neuroscientist L. Robert Slevc and Rice DMA Molly Gebrian that was published in the journal Frontiers.  In contrast to the prevailing views that music is either cognitively separate from language or dependent on it, the article argues that infants acquire language by first listening for the musical features of their native speech and therefore music underlies early language acquisition.  Published in September 2012, the article is among the most read in the journal's history; as of Feb. 2015, it has been cited 25 times.

Musiqa

I have served as Artistic Director of the contemporary music ensemble Musiqa, which I co-founded in 2002.  Musiqa gives approximately twenty concerts per season, including a Downtown Series at venues such as Zilkha Hall, and Asia Society Houston and the new MATCH theater, a free loft series at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and educational programs that serve 6,000 public school students and teachers per year--all at no cost to the participants.  Musiqa has been awarded 2013 and 2016 Adventurous Programming Awards from Chamber Music America and ASCAP, commissioning grants from Chamber Music America and New Music USA, as well as seven grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for our educational programming.

Music and Stroke Recovery

I am currently a Principal Investigator of a study being conducted at Houston Methodist's Center for Performing Arts Medicine investigating music's role in the speech recovery after stroke.
