Thermal conductivity of thin dielectric films
 (1) The thermal conductivity of thin dielectric films is substantially lower than bulk materials of the same composition. This is attributed to an interfacial effect. This research work is winding down as one final paper is being written for publication. This work done in collaboration with F.R. Brotzen at Rice, S. Snider at Texas Instruments and L. Hehn at Grant Prideco.
Hydrogen embrittlement of metals
 (2) Hydrogen diffuses rapidly through many solids and may accumulate in regions having the greatest hydrostatic tensile stress. When such accumulation occurs, especially in metals with a body-centered crystal structure, the material is often embrittled. Based on the kinetics of diffusion near a pre-existing flaw, we describe a critical material strength below which no embrittlement can occur, a critical temperature at which embrittlement is most acute and the rate of flaw growth. This work is being done with Prof. F. Brotzen at Rice.
